Budo Scholar

A new kind of leadership program

Most martial arts teachers have always known the training does more than teach technique. But a martial arts academy is closer to a temple than a classroom, and the hours on the mat belong to the art and to the people who train it. That immersion is the point. So the class itself is not the ideal place to make those life and leadership lessons explicit. That work belongs off the mat. This is what we’ve built.

What it is

A 50‑module curriculum, developed through our accredited program at UC Irvine, paired with real training on the mat.

The curriculum is grounded in the teachings of some of the most respected voices in martial arts, psychology, and education.

Self-mastery

Taking control of your attention and your fear.

Resilience

Learning to recover when failure finds you, on the mat and off.

Adapting to new environments

Getting your bearings in something new, and moving into a position of strength.

The character to lead

Leading with integrity, and thinking for yourself when it matters most.

Proven, going national

This isn’t a concept.

For five years we’ve run this program locally in Southern California with more than 1,000 students since 2021.

92%

reported leaving the program with good or great career knowledge and skills.

97%

demonstrated gains in at least one applied leadership capacity.

84%

demonstrated gains in at least one adaptive mindset capacity.

Outcomes measured by Hello Insight, an independent youth development evaluation platform.

What’s new is the platform. We’ve built an online system that delivers this same proven curriculum anywhere. The first group, about 50 students at UC Irvine, begins in September 2026.

Built around the dojo

A student’s martial arts academy is the heart of Budo Scholar.

A three-way split: Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Kali, and Aikido students training at their own schools. The program layers onto any martial art.

Our online curriculum, mentorship, and leadership development.

Training at their academy

A student’s training continues exactly as it always has: their teacher, their mat, their community. Budo Scholar adds a leadership layer on top of the training, never in place of it.

Amplifying what schools already teach. Martial arts academies have been building discipline, resilience, and character for a long time. What’s been missing is a structured way to carry that off the mat and into the rest of a student’s life. Budo Scholar gives an academy a serious leadership program, powered by what its instructors already do every day.

A scholarship fund for students who couldn’t otherwise train. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we cover the full program and pay dues directly to the academy. Scholarship students choose a quality academy near them. And if you know a young person who belongs on the mat but can’t afford it, refer them. If they are approved for a scholarship, we will fund their membership.

A scholarship we fund together. You offer a discounted membership. We pay it, every month, so none of it comes out of your pocket. Together we bring students onto the mat who dreamed of training but never could.

And as long as you have open space on your mat, every Scholar is new revenue at no cost to you.
